Dayen has the backstory on Pete’s deficit statements

2017 Context: The Sad And Hilarious Story Of Americas Most Incompetent Deficit Hacks

Earlier this week, Politico’s Byron Tau reported on the sad state of The Can Kicks Back, a deficit-hack outfit spun off of Fix The Debt, whose unique strategy in the “OMG TEH DEFICITZ” Wars was to attempt the enlistment of millenials in the effort to impoverish their grandparents.

This wasn’t an off-handed comment either.

That’s Pete’s team lifting up the Progressive Policy Institute, and here they are lifting up
the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. It sounds like 2 separate analyses,
but they’re both part of the Peterson deficit hawk empire, so really it’s 1

PPI is the “radically pragmatic” (their words) think tank of the DLC/New Dems, which has
been consistently wrong about its budget scaremongering. Interest rates haven’t soared,
inflation hasn’t gone nuts. These are liars who use big-sounding numbers to prevent progress.

Here’s the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) supporting Trump’s
proposed cuts to Social Security and Medicare. This is the organization Team Pete
is relying on for fiscal analysis

In fact, CRFB has consistently groused that Trump’s budget
doesn’t cut Social Security and Medicare enough https://t.co/UHsrENjs5E

In the last 24 hours, Pete Buttigieg and the Trump administration promoted the same talking
points that are typically used to justify cuts to Social Security and Medicare:

January 28, 2020 could very well go down as the most mind-boggling day in the history of Israel and its relations with the United States. Against the backdrop of a White House audience of enthusiastic cheerleaders, in a ceremony that seemed to fuse a Donald Trump rally with a religious Zionist gala, the president pronounced a dramatic, pro-Israel shift in U.S. foreign policy and laid down a lopsided peace plan that exceeds any rational Israeli’s wildest dreams.

The extraordinary event was rendered even more surreal by the fact that mere hours before Benjamin Netanyahu flashed self-satisfied grins as he stood at Trump’s side in Washington, his indictments were formally submitted to Jerusalem District Court, which he will soon face as a criminal defendant. Anyone
unfamiliar with the prime minister’s rapidly escalating legal woes would never have guessed it: Netanyahu was beaming like a groom at his wedding.
